  • MMA Fighter’s False Workplace Injury Leads to Termination

    | by Travis Uresk | June 6th, 2026 | Vernal, Utah (2/17/26)—Last year on 7/26/25, Earl Gerald Staley, age 39, participated in an MMA fight in Price, Utah. During the fight, he was knocked out and landed on his left shoulder. Following the match, a ringside physician noted shoulder pain and weakness during a post-fight exam, prompting an X-ray that showed no bone injuries or fractures. An MRI was scheduled for further assessment. The day after the fight, Earl reported to his employer that he had injured his shoulder in a slip-and-fall accident while on duty at Ashley Medical Center in Vernal, Utah, on 7/24/25. He informed his supervisor via email and also notified the insurance company that he needed to rest and ice his shoulder on 7/25/25. He claimed he had been at work on that day but participated in weigh-ins for the MMA fight on the 26th. Dr. Murdock’s pre-fight physical on 7/25/25 indicated no health issues preventing Earl from competing, and no injuries were observed at that time. However, during an investigator interview on 2/2/26, Dr. Murdock stated that the post-fight examination revealed shoulder pain and weakness, which were not present during the initial pre-fight exam. Earl told the investigator he injured his shoulder at work during the slip-and-fall and was further injured during the fight. He claimed to have informed his supervisor about the workplace injury via phone and email on 7/24/25. Conversely, Earl's supervisor stated she only received Earl's email on 7/27/25, in which he reported the fall occurred on 7/25/25, and she was unaware of his MMA participation until her investigation. Ultimately, Earl's employment was terminated for submitting a false Workers' Compensation claim, as the investigation uncovered discrepancies between his reported injuries, the timing of events, and his participation in the MMA fight.

  • Customers at Walmart witness a female throwing up and acting strangely

    | by Travis Uresk | June 5th, 2026 | Vernal, Utah (6/4/2026)—Several customers in Walmart witnessed a woman throwing up and acting strangely. She was seen with an approximately 3-year-old child. The child appeared dirty and disheveled. Witnesses spoke with the police and directed them to the location of the female. 33-year-old Jessica Dorothy Limberty was found erratically pacing through the aisles, having difficulty maintaining control of the items in her hands, and showing body spasms. Cpl. Ross tried to talk to Jessica as she was having a hard time maintaining a train of thought and staying focused. She couldn't hold still and had trouble responding appropriately to the officer's questions. When asked if Jessica was under the influence of anything, she stated she had taken Adderall that was prescribed to her. Jessica's child was seen taking chemical items off the shelf while officers were speaking with her. She didn't appear to notice this and had to be alerted by officers to what her child was doing. These behaviors are consistent with an individual under the influence of a controlled substance. The officer determined there was probable cause to arrest Jessica for being under the influence. Based on Jessica's physical condition and actions, she was endangering the welfare of her child. Jessica was arrested and transported to the Uintah County Jail, and was booked on the charges of reckless child abuse and public intoxication. Traffic and Criminal Report

  • A neighbor at an apartment complex can hear screaming. A man gets beaten up, and a child gets taken.

    | by Travis Uresk | June 4th, 2026 | Roosevelt, Utah (5/27/26)—A neighbor at an apartment building at 700 E 290 N called police, saying she could hear a lot of screaming and banging around. Police arrived at the scene and could see a man looking out of a window. The officer knocked on the door, and a man asked who it was. Officer Arnold identified himself as a Roosevelt City Police officer, and the male opened the door. The officer asked the man what was going on inside the apartment. He apologized and said he was still "hopped up" on adrenaline. The man told police he was hanging out with his roommate, and her baby daddy was over for visitation. The two went into a different room for some alone time, and the baby daddy kicked the door open and started "beating the shit out of" him. The man stated that it was because they had a history of a relationship. Officer Arnold asked where the suspect was now, and he said he had run off about 10 minutes ago. The officer asked if there was anyone else inside the apartment, and the man said it was only him and his roommate's daughter. The officer wanted to see for himself who was inside the home, and he gave them permission to enter. The man took Officer Arnold inside and showed him around the house. He said his room is on the left-hand side, but pointed to the right-hand side, saying it was where the girl's daughter was sleeping. Inside that room was a full-size bed and a smaller bed, on which the child was lying. After the officer confirmed that nobody else was inside the house, he asked the male to walk him through, from start to finish, what had happened. The male said that 26-year-old Trevor Eugene Phillips was there to see his kid. He stated they went to the other room, and Trevor kicked the door in and started punching him. While the officer and the male were speaking, the female walked in, talked over them, saying, "They were in there doing their thing.” She told Officer Arnold her son was passed out in the front room, and she heard a loud bang. She said, "After he got done beating his ass", he came out. She told police that when they came out, their son was gone, and he is still gone. The officer asked the female if Trevor had a car, and she said she didn’t know. The other officers who were looking for Trevor were notified that he had his son with him. She told the police she had just dropped the protective order so he could visit. She said Trevor's mom told her he was going to counseling. The officer asked the female if she had full custody, and she said yes. Then she was asked whether she knew where he lived, and she told the police that, as far as she knew, he was living in Colorado. Later on, the female called back and told dispatch she had received a call stating that Trevor was taking the 1-year-old son to Colorado to avoid being caught and that he was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla. Officer Arnold returned to the apartment with Officer Adams and Deputy Clyde to ask the female additional questions. She told them she was on the phone with Trevor's mother when police arrived, and his mother told her about "everything." She told the officers he had asked why she called the police. The female explained to the police that the room that Trevor kicked down the door to was the male's space. She had mentioned that the door was unlocked and that Trevor had come in, so the police asked if she had let him in for a visitation, and she said no. Officer Adams asked whether he had permission to come in at all, and she said no. She told them she told his mom maybe tomorrow for the visitation. The police told her they would try to track down the vehicle and asked her to let the police know if she heard anything. Later on, the female texted 911, stating that Trevor was on R-Hill and that she was there to pick up her son. Dispatch began tracking her location based on the 911 text and relayed it to the officers. Officer Arnold went up around R-Hill looking for the tan vehicle, and Officer Reed located the female in Roosevelt. Officer Reed informed Officer Arnold that the female now had her son back. Officer Arnold was unable to locate the Toyota, so he told Officer Reed he would meet the female at the apartment. Officer Arnold met with the female back at her apartment, confirmed she had gotten her son back, and then asked her to tell him what happened. She told him that Trevor called her, saying he would give her son back, but they'd have to meet on R-Hill, and he would run if she called the cops. As soon as the female got her son back, she tried to pin the location and text it to 911. A later review of plate reader data showed that the vehicle Trevor was suspected of driving was heading eastbound past mile marker 12.8 on SR121 at 6:00 am, and the text from R-Hill came in at 5:42 am. That vehicle was also seen coming eastbound into Roosevelt on the west side of US-40 at 12:42 am. It then left town on the east side and came back at 1:18 am, heading westbound on the east side of US-40. This timeline matches the statements about when Trevor arrived at the apartment. On 6/1/2026, Officer Arnold was notified by Cpl. Cox with the DCSO, who had Trevor in custody. He told Cpl. Cox stated that he had probable cause to arrest Trevor on charges of Burglary of a Dwelling, Assault, and other charges. Deputy Cox informed Officer Arnold that he would have Trevor booked into the Duchesne County Jail. A review of Protective Orders showed that the protective order was still active as of the date of arrest, which was served on 4/15/2026. Trevor Phillips was booked into the Duchesne County Jail on charges of Burglary of a dwelling for entering the dwelling without permission with intent to commit crimes including assault, charges of protective order violation for violating an active protective order, charges of assault for assaulting the male subject, charges of criminal mischief with a domestic violence enhancement for the damage caused to the door frame of the bedroom, and charges of domestic violence in the presence of a child because there were two children in the residence at the time of these occurrences. • A mother calls police on ex-husband for giving their two teenage daughters alcohol

    | by Travis Uresk | June 3rd, 2026 | Roosevelt, Utah (6/1/26)—A woman reported to police that her two teenage daughters, a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old, had been drinking alcohol provided to them by their father, 36-year-old Brycyn Gerald Ralph Payne, during his parental time. Deputy Phillips arrived on scene and spoke with the 16-year-old female, who showed signs of alcohol consumption. With consent from her mother, the deputy administered a preliminary breath test that showed a BrAC of 0.08. The juvenile told the deputy that her father, Brycyn, provided her with the alcohol and mixed it with root beer. She continued to say that her father was passed out in his bedroom after drinking a lot. The deputy wanted to talk to the 13-year-old, but she could not be found. The 16-year-old used her phone to find her sister's location, which showed the 13-year-old down by Basin Builder's Supply along Highway 40. Deputy Phillips left the residence to try to locate the 13-year-old, as it was possible she could be intoxicated while walking along a major highway. He asked fr RPD Officer Wheeler to assist him in locating the juvenile. The deputy went back to Brycyn's current girlfriend's home. She arrived and told the deputy she had come home previously from work and found one of the juveniles asleep on the living room floor with vomit on her shirt and hair. The girlfriend added that the other teenager was in her room and that Brycyn was asleep in his. She also said she found and disposed of a bottle of liquor. Officer Wheeler located the 13-year-old a short time later, and with her mother’s consent, Deputy Phillips conducted another preliminary breath test. Before conducting the test, the juvenile said that she was probably still drunk. The breath test showed a BrAC of 0.07. She also stated that her father provided her with the alcohol. Based on the statements of both juveniles, their observed intoxication, the preliminary breath tests, witness statements, Brycyn's absence throughout the incident, Deputy Phillips determined there was probable cause to believe that Brycyn Payne knowingly supplied alcohol to two minors and, by becoming intoxicated and unconscious while responsible for their care, recklessly created a substantial risk of harm to them. One juvenile became ill and vomited, while the other left the residence unsupervised and was at one point approximately 4 miles from the residence on foot. Deputy Phillips and Officer Wheeler entered the residence and made their way to the bedroom where Brycyn was sleeping. He came out the door, was immediately detained and arrested, and then taken outside to a patrol vehicle. Brycyn was placed in the back of the patrol vehicle and Mirandized, but claimed not to understand his rights. He was then taken to the hospital for a medical clearance. While at the hospital, he told Deputy Phillips he drank until he couldn't stay awake, and hoped he wouldn't wake back up. After being cleared from the medical clearance, Brycyn was transported to the Duchesne County Jail, where he was booked in on two counts of knowingly supplying alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor, two counts of delinquency of a minor, a class B misdemeanor, two counts of reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor, and two counts of Child abuse reckless, a class B misdemeanor. When Uintah County Deputies arrived, they spoke with a female on the porch who told them that 19-year-old Joshua James Elmer had gotten into an argument with her and his mother outside in the yard. The female told police that Joshua grabbed his mother and began to choke her from behind. The woman stated she tried to separate them, but Joshua grabbed a hold of her left hand, spraining one of her fingers, and causing an abrasion on her hand while he was fighting her off of him. The woman managed to separate Joshua from his mother, and then Joshua grabbed his sister and threw her to the ground. Joshua kicked in the door, causing damage to the door frame, walked to his bedroom, and locked himself inside. • A couple returns home from the bar and gets into an altercation where the male gets his hand bitten

    | by Travis Uresk | June 2nd 2026 | Vernal, Utah (5/30/2026)—A couple had gone out to the bar and consumed a large amount of alcohol, and when they returned home, an argument started. When police arrived, they encountered the male outside the residence. According to the male, 26-year-old Bailee Lorraine Christensen became angry and told him to leave. He told police that Bailee became physical, scratching him on the neck and then biting him on the hand. Officer Escobedo saw a large red mark on the male's left hand that had broken the skin in a curved pattern, consistent with a bite mark. The officer also observed scratch marks on the left side of the male's neck, consistent with fingernails. While Officer Escobedo spoke with the female, he noticed she had a broken fingernail that was freshly bleeding. She also had a red stain on her right palm that looked like blood, but she claimed it was lip gloss. According to Bailee, she and the male had gone to the bar and consumed a large amount of alcohol. She denied that anything physical had occurred between her and the male. When the officer told her that he observed the injuries on the male, Bailee claimed that their infant child was the one who bit him during dinner, and the scratches were due to the male having a job as a welder. Officer Escobedo went to speak with the male to examine his injuries again. The bite marks on his hand did not appear to be consistent with Bailee's story and looked more substantial than what an infant could inflict on an adult. Additionally, the officer observed injuries on the male that were from his job, and compared them to the fresh injuries on his neck. It was determined by the officer that the fresh injuries were not consistent with what Bailee had stated, but were consistent with what the male had told police. Officer Escobedo determined there was probable cause to charge Bailee Christensen with assault and public intoxication. Bailee was placed under arrest, and she then submitted to a PBT, which provided a result of 0.217 BrAC. Bailee Christensen was transported and booked into the Uintah County Jail.

  • During a traffic stop, police find a container that the female says is a "community" container she and others use to dispose their syringes in

    | by Travis Uresk | May 31st, 2026 | Vernal, Utah (5/29/26)—A traffic stop was made by Deputy Fairey in the area of 800 N and 1500 E due to the car not having a visible license plate or a temporary registration. The driver told the deputy she was the vehicle's owner, and the temporary registration in the rear window fell down. The vehicle's VIN was provided to dispatch, which confirmed that no insurance information was on file with the state. The driver was unable to provide proof of insurance. The female passenger was identified as 35-year-old Ashley Dawn Crippen. Due to the circumstances of the stop, Deputy Fairey requested a K9 unit to respond to the scene. Upon arrival, the canine conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle and provided a positive indication for the presence of illegal substances. Because the K9 alerted, probable cause existed to search the vehicle. During the search, an assisting deputy located a black sharps-style container on the passenger floorboard. Upon examining the contents, several syringes were found inside the container, one of which contained a brown residue consistent with Heroin. The assisting deputy also located a black tooter-style pipe on the floor behind the front passenger seat. Crippen admitted that the pipe belonged to her, stating that it was new and hadn’t been used yet. She claimed she wasn’t trying to conceal it; it had fallen while she was placing it in her purse. Regarding the sharps container, Crippen stated that it was a "community" container she and others used to dispose of syringes, and that she had previously emptied it before placing additional syringes inside to prevent them from being left unattended. The syringe and other items recovered from the vehicle were collected and submitted for laboratory testing to confirm the presence of illegal substances. Concerning the syringe containing the brown residue, Crippen stated that it had been given to her by another individual, whom she declined to identify. While Crippen denied that the substance was Heroin, she knew the individual who provided the syringe had believed it to be Heroin before attempting to use it. Crippen denied that the substance was Heroin. Deputy Fairey determined that probable cause existed to place Ashley Crippen under arrest. Crippen was placed under arrest and transported to the Uintah County Jail for booking on the following charges: Misdemeanor A possession of Heroin, and Misdemeanor B possession of drug paraphernalia. | by Travis Uresk | May 31st, 2026 | Vernal, Utah (5/29/26)—Deputy Leishman stopped a vehicle near 400 N on Vernal Avenue after the Colorado license plate didn’t return to a vehicle. A records check of the vehicle VIN showed that the vehicle registration had expired and that there was no insurance associated with it. It also showed that Holly's driver's license was suspended in Colorado. The driver was identified as 40-year-old Holly Lynn Acord, and 34-year-old Ty Pierre Morgan was sitting in the front passenger seat. During the stop, K9 Deputy Oldham deployed his canine around the exterior of the vehicle. The K9 positively alerted to the odor of illegal drugs, which allowed the deputies probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, Deputy Pratt located a handgun concealed beneath clothing on the front passenger seat in the exact area where Ty was sitting. Based on the location of the firearm, Ty had immediate access to and control over the handgun while seated in the vehicle. The handgun magazine consistent with the firearm recovered from inside the vehicle was located on Holly's person. They also found a black bag behind the driver's seat containing a large quantity of a white crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. • A Uintah County man arrested for beating on a pregnant woman

    | by Travis Uresk | May 30th, 2026 | Vernal, Utah (5/18/26)—A couple living at 126 N 500 E in the East Meadows Mobile Home Park in Uintah County got into an argument when the woman tried to end her relationship with 37-year-old Cort R. Warren. The woman told police the argument had started the night before and that she had left the home. She then returned to the residence the next morning to pick up her children. The argument started up again, and she said "It got a little rough." She told police, "There may have been some hair pulling, a little shoving, and pushing down." She told Cpl. Randall she tried to fight back and pull Cort's hair while he was pulling hers. He asked her whether they had children together, and she replied that she was currently pregnant with Cort's child. While Cpl. Randall was speaking with the female, he saw a red mark on her forehead and asked her how she got it. She began to cry and said Cort held her down by holding her wrists and kneeling on her, and began hitting her in the forehead with an open hand. The Corporal then spoke with Cort and asked him to tell his side of the story. Cort began to explain to Cpl. Randall that he and the female had been arguing, and this wasn't the first time the female had attacked him. He said he didn't care, but it happened in front of his children, and it hurt him. The officer asked what he meant by her “attacking him.” Cort replied, “Dumb girl shit, like slapping and pulling hair.” He was asked if the female had slapped him, and he stated yes, but he didn’t care. When asked where she had slapped him, Cort just said, “You guys,” and didn’t answer. One of the children began crying and Cort asked if he could grab him, and Cpl. Randall told him he could. After Cort calmed the child down, the Corporal asked him whether both children were at the residence when the altercation occurred. Cort stated they were. While the officer was interviewing Cort, the officer asked him what he did when the woman slapped him. Cort told the officer he grabbed her hands and tried to get her out of the house. He tried to restrain her so she couldn’t hit him. Cort’s youngest child began crying again, and while he was calming the child down, Cpl. Randall spoke with Sgt. Johnstun. After the child was calm the officer asked Cort to explain what happened that morning again. Cort told Cpl. Randall, the female, came over, still upset from the night before. She tried to take the children and he wouldn't let her. Cort then said he didn't know what upset her, and then threw something at the TV. Cort told her to stop, and that is when she attacked him. He wanted to get her out of the house because she was attacking him in front of the kids, by slapping, pulling his hair, and scratching him. He told the officer the female had him by the hair, and they went to the floor. He got off of her and told her to get out of the house. Cpl. Randall did not observe any physical injuries to Cort. Sgt. Johnstun noticed a clump of the woman's hair fall out as he spoke with her. Cpl. Randall determined that Cort Warren used unlawful force or violence against the female, which resulted in bodily injury. He also used unlawful force and violence against the female with the knowledge of her being pregnant, and committed these acts in front of their two juvenile sons. Cort was taken to the Uintah County Jail, where he was booked on the following charges: One count of assault of a pregnant person, domestic violence. The deputy notified Cpl. Cox said the woman was attempting to hitchhike and was hugging street poles. While Cpl. Cox was en route. Another caller reported that he saw the same female urinating on the sidewalk in front of the high school, then continued walking West, trying to hitch a ride. The deputy arrived in the area and located the female standing in the road with her thumb out. He pulled over to talk to the woman and identified her as 52-year-old Heather Dawn Sewell. While the deputy was speaking with Heather, it was obvious she was intoxicated by the odor of alcohol emitting from her breath. She told Cpl. Cox was ditched by her friends, who were staying in Altamont, which is why she was out here now. The Corporal told Heather she was seen peeing on the sidewalk. She said she didn't want to admit to doing that. The deputy told her he didn't need her to admit it, since there was a witness who had seen her do it. Heather's behavior was strange and erratic, and she was having difficulty standing up. Heather provided a breath sample, which indicated a BrAC of 0.133. The witness stated he was with his children when he saw the female. She was squatting in the shade, trying to stay cool. He then saw her pants all the way down, and could see liquid trickling down onto the cement. His 8-year-old daughter said she saw her exposed buttocks. While on scene with Heather, Cpl. Cox tried to find someone who would be willing to come and pick Heather up because he thought she was a danger to herself in her current intoxicated state.
