A Vernal City Police Officer was traveling westbound near 550 West 100 South when he saw a male he knew from previous law enforcement encounters.
Officer Nielsen stopped to talk to 56-year-old Patrick Eugene Mahaney, knowing he had warrants. As soon as Patrick saw the officer stop, he went into the backyard near the mentioned address.
Sgt. Watt observed a male on 200 South who matched the description of Patrick Mahaney. Sgt. Watt attempted to stop Patrick as he quickly left the area. A short time later, Sgt. Watt located Patrick hiding in a person's backyard and placed him in handcuffs.
Sgt Watt searched Patrick and found a small baggie containing Methamphetamine in his front coin pocket.
The officers determined that Patrick had committed the offense of possession of a Schedule II drug and possession of drug paraphernalia due to the baggie of suspected Methamphetamine found on his person.
Patrick was secured in the back of Officer Nielsen’s patrol vehicle and transported to the Uintah County Jail.
Patrick was in need of medical clearance due to high blood pressure. Patrick was then transported to Ashley Regional Medical Center. Patrick was medically cleared by the attending physician at the hospital.
Patrick was transported back to the Uintah County Jail, where he was booked on possession of a Schedule II drug, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and two statewide warrants.
