Officer Candelas was traveling westbound when he saw a Chrysler 200 stopped in the number one lane with its hood up facing eastbound.
The officer turned around to assist the individuals when he witnessed a female exit the car and start running South toward a nearby neighborhood.
Upon approaching the driver of the vehicle, Officer Candelas noticed two open containers of alcohol in the front center console. He asked the driver about the female who had fled, and she identified her as Mariea. The driver said Mariea had been in the front passenger seat and claimed ownership of the drinks. The vehicle was inoperable and scheduled for tow.
A records check revealed the vehicle was registered to 44-year-old Mariea Marie Hackford.
A vehicle search yielded a purse in the front passenger seat containing Mariea's Utah and Tribal Identification cards. Additionally, a clear bag containing a white crystalline substance, suspected to be methamphetamine, was found in the same purse. A broken pipe with burnt brown residue was discovered in a compartment of the center console.
Portable breath tests conducted on the other two individuals in the vehicle registered a 0.00 percent BrAC level.
Three days later, Mariea was apprehended by another officer on active statewide warrants. During questioning, Mariea confirmed ownership of the gold bag with a native-printed wallet found in the vehicle but denied ownership of the alcohol or the pipe located in the center console.
Due to the items being in Mariea's property, she was booked into the Uintah County Jail for possession of a Schedule II substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. With Mariea being in the front passenger seat next to where the alcohol was located, she was also booked for open containers on the highway.
Mariea Marie Hackford was later released.
