A Duchesne County Deputy was dispatched to a suspicious person call on County Road 178 near Roosevelt. The reporting party, 56-year-old Troy Clyde Erickson, stated that someone was on his 13-acre property going through his items and vehicles.
Clyde said that he saw a male dressed in dark clothing and a hat but didn't see them, didn't know which direction they went, and didn't see any vehicles. While en route, he called back again and said that his dog was indicating something and he was scared.
When Cpl. Cox arrived he met with Troy outside the residence near the front door. He began speaking, and his speech was very quick, and he was sweating even though it was below 10 degrees outside. All are consistent with methamphetamine use. Meth also causes paranoia.
The deputy looked around the area for signs of someone trying to break into Troy's things but didn't find anything.
After checking all the windows in Troy's home were intact and that no one had entered the house, the deputy asked Troy about any drug problems he may have. Troy stated that he has had issues with drugs (meth) and said he last used about four months ago.
Cpl. Cox told Troy about the indicators that he was seeing, and he strongly believed that Troy used meth more recently. Troy then said that he had used about 2 days ago.
The deputy asked Troy if he had any drugs in the home, and at first, he said no and then said he had a broken pipe in the bathroom.
The deputy asked Troy to take him inside the home to retrieve the pipe. Troy escorted the deputy to the bathroom and opened a drawer under the sink.
Cpl. Cox located a broken glass pipe with a white crystal substance consistent with meth and used hypodermic syringe needles. Also inside the drawer was a blue straw, commonly known as a "Tooter," that had a white residue, a small clear baggy with white residue, and a piece of tin foil with burnt residue. All these items are consistent with meth and drug paraphernalia.
Troy was advised that he was being arrested for possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the hospital because of concern for his health with how amped he appeared to be from the drugs. Troy received a medical clearance and was booked into the Duchesne County Jail.
The incident reported by Troy appeared to be unfounded and possibly was caused by Troy using illegal drugs.
