On 9/27/24, a woman told police that her ex-husband, 26-year-old Jared Dale Stagg, sold her gold watch, which belonged to her grandmother, who had passed away, to a local gold shop. The woman stated that she checked her belongings and that the gold watch was missing.

Officer Nielsen visited the Gold and Silver Coin for Sale at 81 West Main Street and spoke with the store owner. The owner said that Jared came in and sold him a 14k gold watch for $600. The owner stated that he did not know if the watch was good and just gave him the gold value.

The owner stated that Jared returned to the store and put the gold watch on layaway. Officer Nielsen then seized the gold watch for evidence.

The officer checked the watch's value, finding a value close to $3000.

At this time, Officer Nielsen determined that Jared Stagg had committed theft with a value exceeding $1,500 but less than $5,000. He also committed Theft by Deception with a value greater than $500 and less than $1,500, making this a class A misdemeanor. This is due to selling the gold watch he had stolen to Gold and Silver Coins for Sale.

On 10/7/24, Officer Nielsen contacted Jared by phone. He stated that he was at work and would notify the officer when he got home.

On 10/8/24, Jared called Officer Nielsen, saying he was at the Vernal City Police Department. Sgt. Johnstun met with Jared, placed him in handcuffs, and transported him to the Uintah County Jail.

Jared Stagg was booked into the Uintah County Jail for Theft, a third-degree felony due to the item's value, and Theft by Deception, a class A misdemeanor due to the price he had sold the item.
