Uintah Basin Man Charged With Aggravated Child Abuse

(Uintah County) Detective Sgt. Tribe began an investigation into allegations of physical abuse involving two minor children who were interviewed at the Roosevelt Children’s Justice Center.
During the forensic interview with the first child, they disclosed that 27-year-old Dylon Ray Smuin slapped the child on the side of the head, resulting in the child hitting their head on the side of the kitchen counter.
The child also disclosed that Dylon disciplines them by spanking them on the buttocks with his hand, a belt, and by kicking them in the buttocks while wearing boots.
The second child was then interviewed, who said Dylon had kicked them while wearing boots. The child disclosed that this occurred approximately five times, corroborating the statements made during the previous interview with the child's sibling.
After the interviews were completed, a forensic medical examination was conducted on the children. This examination was completed by a forensic nurse with Primary Children's Center for Safe and Healthy Families.
The nurse spoke with Detective Sgt. Tribe who had concerns regarding the multiple bruises found during the exam. The nurse documented physical injuries, including a bruise to the child's ear and bruising on the buttocks and both arms, consistent with grab injuries.
The detective was shown images that depict a reddish-purple to bluish bruise on the upper right ear. The forensic nurse expressed that these bruises were consistent with physical abuse, and what the children had stated in the interview.
On March 9th, 2026, Detective Sgt. Tribe went to Dylon's home, where he was detained and later taken into custody.
Dylon admitted to hitting the older child after they were yelling at their mother. Dylon stated he struck the child on the side of the head with an open hand, which resulted in the child's head hitting the side of the kitchen counter. Dylon indicated the bruise was immediate and said he immediately had remorse for what he did.
Detective Sgt. Tribe confronted Dylon about kicking the children in the buttocks, and he admitted that he had kicked them. He also confronted him about the forensic examination that had been completed, and bruising was present during that time, indicating the injuries were recent.
However, he denied ever kicking them hard enough to leave any marks. Dylon indicated this occurred approximately one month prior. Dylon blamed the child's sibling, stating they roughhouse, and also denied ever using a belt during discipline. He further blamed the other bruises on the children playing.
Dylon Smuin was transported to the Uintah County Jail, where he was booked for aggravated child abuse with serious injury.
