Vernal, Ut.- On 11/2/22, Officer White responded to a theft report at the Split Mountain Motel.
When the Officer arrived, he met with the Motel owner, who told him that someone had stolen money from the cash box from the drawer at the front desk. The value of cash taken was $323.00.
When the employee arrived the next morning to open the office, she found all the money was missing from the cash box. The same employee closed the night before and locked the door to the office.
Officer White was granted access to the surveillance camera system to view the footage from the night before. The video showed a male and female exit room 128 at approximately 3:00 am. The male wore jeans and tan leather boots, and the female wore dark open-toed sandals. According to the affidavit.
The two individuals walked in the direction of the office, which has a connected room accessible by a key card, and then they disappeared out of view of the camera.
Officer White watched the two individuals appear in a room connected to the office. The camera in the office was then covered by something white for a short time. Once the white covering was removed, the Officer observed the same two individuals wearing the same clothing exit the room connected to the office and walk back to room 128.
While viewing the video footage, one of the Motel employees was able to identify the female in the video. She had previously been employed at the Motel, and she had been recently fired. Her name is Jessica Jade Boren, and while employed there, she had access to a master key, and she had not yet returned the key to the Motel owner.
Officer White went to room 128 and made contact with the male inside the room, who was identified as Trevor Thomas Mcniven, who stated Jessica was walking back from 7/11. Once she arrived at the Motel, Officer White noticed she was wearing the same dark open-toed sandals he had seen her wearing on the surveillance video.
Officer White asked Jessica where she had been the night before, and she stated that she was in her room. He asked her who had been with her that night, and she stated Trevor and one other person.
He then asked her if she had ever had a key card, and she stated that she had returned it to one of the employees. Officer White asked Jessica what that key card had access to, and she stated that it allowed her access to everything.
During this conversation, Jessica was asked when she had been fired, and she stated November 1st, 2022, or October 31st, 2022, and if she had any guests come over to her room. She stated that a guest came over around 6:00 or 6:30 that morning.
Officer White then spoke with Trevor and asked him what he was doing the night before, and he stated that he had been watching movies.
Once the Officer entered the Motel room, he saw the same pair of work boots he had seen on the surveillance video. The Officer informed them he had seen them both leaving their room, entering the room next to the office, and that the camera had been covered with something.
Trevor was then placed in handcuffs; during that time, he stated Jessica had nothing to do with it.
Officer White suspected he made that statement because she was the one that covered the camera while Trevor took the cash. Due to her being a former employee, she knew exactly where the camera was located, so she knew how to cover it, according to the affidavit.
Trevor and Jessica were both transported to the Uintah County Jail.
