On 2/19/25, 65-year-old Jeffery Seymour Giles attended a court hearing via WebEx in the 8th District Court in Duchesne to set a new trial date for previous charges. Jeffery was on probation for the charges in question and had not checked in with his probation officer since November 2024.
During the hearing, Jeffery requested that his probation be moved to a private provider in the Salt Lake City Area. He informed the court that, due to his health, he was traveling back to the Salt Lake Area to go to a hospice facility.
On 2/20/25, the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office received information that Jeffery didn't return to the Salt Lake area to report to Hospice and was at his residence in Fruitland.
Deputies and detectives responded to the property with his probation officer in an attempt to locate and perform a probation check on Jeffery. When officers arrived, they located Jeffery in a camp trailer on the property, where he was watching his 1-year-old grandson.
Lt. Hargis spoke with Jeffery and had him perform a UA test. The results returned positive for methamphetamine.

A search was conducted of the property and inside a smaller building on the property where Jeffery was known to have resided. Officers located several items of drug paraphernalia and a small pill bottle that contained shards of a white crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine.
A search was also conducted on the trailer Jeffery had been staying in with his son Travis Giles and the 1-year-old child. During the search, a coat was found hanging next to the kitchen sink. Inside the pocket of the coat, officers located Jeffery's wallet containing his identification and a citation written to Jeffery by Deputy Mathews on February 19, 2025, for a violation of a county code for excessive trash on his property.
Inside the same coat pocket, a baggie containing a white crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine was found. When the baggie was weighed at the sheriff's office later on, it contained approximately 41 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
While the police were on scene, Detective Hunter witnessed the child walking around the trailer, playing very near to where the meth was located. It would have been very easy for the child to reach the meth, open the baggie and come into contact with or ingest the methamphetamine. There were also several more items of paraphernalia found inside the trailer around the child.
When Jeffery was asked about the Hospice facility, he told the courts he was checking into it and told officers that he had paperwork for the facility. The detective gathered the paperwork, and the only reference he could find in reference to a Hospice Jeffery had been approved for the facility pending the approval of a PCP.
Jefferey stated to Detective Duncan on scene that he was still trying to get approved for a hospice in the Salt Lake area.
Jeffery was arrested and transported to the Duchesne County Jail without incident.
