A man reaches over an unlocked counter and steals a $1000 gun suppressor from Basin Sports

Vernal, Utah (5/6/26)—Officer Maughan was dispatched to Basin Sports on a reported shoplifting that had occurred on April 29th, 2026. When the officer arrived, he met with the manager, who explained what had happened.
The manager told the officer that a male who was identified as 45-year-old James Burnett Swett had stolen a suppressor. Officer Maughan watched the security camera footage and, upon review, he saw a male looking at the suppressors.
The suppressors were in a cabinet that did not allow patrons access and had to be opened by an employee. James could be seen reaching over the counter, finding that the cabinet had been left unlocked. James then took multiple suppressors out of the cabinet by reaching his hand inside.
James ensured the employees were busy, then checked to see if anyone was watching before selecting a Silencer Company Scythe TI worth $999.99.
James then could be seen closing the cabinet to the suppressors by reaching back over the counter and sliding the doors shut while attempting to hide the suppressor between two cabinets. He then leaves the area before returning with a pair of pants, which he later uses to conceal the suppressor while he goes to a different area of the store.
Once James moved away from the area, he can be seen on a separate security camera angle putting the suppressor in his pocket before leaving the store without paying for it.
Officer Maughan determined there was probable cause to arrest James Swett for retail theft, a class A misdemeanor. It was also determined that, due to James having reached over the counter to gain access to a portion of the store where he was not allowed in order to commit a theft, there was probable cause to arrest James for burglary, a 3rd-degree felony.
James was located on May 7th by an assisting Officer and transported to the Uintah County Jail, where he was booked on the charges.
