Deputy Roth responded to an address in the area of 5000 East 4000 South on a report of a male who had broken into a residence.
The homeowner stated he was woken up by the sound of someone walking up the staircase inside the home. He then heard the sound of running water coming from the upstairs bathroom.
When the homeowner entered the bathroom, he found 50-year-old George William Merrell naked in the bathtub taking a bath.
The homeowner asked the intruder what he was doing inside his home. George waved the homeowner off, and then he told George he wasn’t allowed to be there and to leave. George told the homeowner to leave him alone.
The homeowner attempted to find a firearm for protection, but when he couldn't find any ammo, he and his son left the residence and called 911.
As law enforcement began clearing the residence, they located George in the upstairs master bathroom and observed that he was still lying naked in a bathtub full of water. George refused to follow multiple orders to show both hands, only showing one hand at a time. George also refused multiple orders to get out of the bathtub while pretending to be asleep.
While attempting to pull George from the bathtub, he jerked his hand from the officer's grasp and continued to physically resist while being placed into handcuffs while claiming he had permission to be in the home.
George was transported to The Uintah County Jail and booked.
George was arrested on 9/14/2024 for trespassing and was released from jail on 9/19/2024.
On 9/19/2024, George was arrested for violation of a protective order just hours after his release from jail.
On 9/20/2024, George was released from jail for violating his protective order. Approximately 17 hours after his release, George was arrested for this incident, including felony Burglary.
Deputy Roth requested that the courts issue no bail for his arrest. He believed that George had shown that he would constitute a substantial danger to the community if released from jail. The courts granted Deputy Roth’s request.
George William Merrell may post bail in the amount of $2,500.00
