While Detective Gardenheir was investigating another case involving 28-year-old Joseph Dale Hackford, he discovered child sexual abuse material on Joseph's cellphone.
Based on the other case being investigated, the detective had already written a search warrant for Joseph's phone.
Joseph had been witnessed trying to record a victim while they were in a bathroom. He was seen placing his phone under the door of the bathroom while a 21-year-old female was inside taking a shower.
While going through Joseph's phone, Detective Gardenheir located a video that showed Joseph recording a nude female under a bathroom door. The video starts by showing Joseph's face then the video goes upside down as the camera goes under a bathroom door. A nude female can be seen standing in the shower with a towel around her shoulders.
It was determined that the female was a child under 14 years old.
On 12/23/24, Detective Gardenheir arrested Joseph Hackford at his residence, 138 East 960 South Unit S303, Vernal, Utah.

While the detective interviewed Joseph, he denied any knowledge of any such video.
Joseph was booked on 1st-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor for the production of child sexual abuse material. He is further being booked on 3rd-degree felony voyeurism for surreptitiously recording a child under 14 years old. The child was in a location where she had an expectation of privacy.
When the detective spoke to the victim, she was unaware she had been recorded.
Joseph Hackford is currently on felony probation with Adult Probation and Parole. AP&P has requested a board warrant to send Joseph back to prison.
