On Tuesday, March 18th, law enforcement officers from the Uintah County Sheriff's Department, Vernal City Police Department, and Naples City Police Department responded to Ashley Valley Medical Center regarding a shooting investigation.

Officers arrived on scene and met with a male individual, identified as 39-year-old Angelo Jefferson Gonzalez, who had a gunshot wound to his right forearm.

Angelo stated he and his fiance were traveling to Salt Lake City from Colorado when another vehicle cut them off. He said the other driver pulled a gun and shot him in the arm.

Angelo declined to provide further information and requested an attorney.

Investigators then spoke with Angelo’s fiancé, who initially corroborated Angelo's account of how an unknown male shot him and provided a description of the suspects (two white males) and a vehicle description (white SUV).

Upon further questioning, the female admitted there was no other vehicle involved and said she and Angelo had been arguing in their vehicle, and he had shot himself in the arm.

The female had a black eye that was continuing to darken as investigators spoke with her and acknowledged Angelo had caused the black eye. It was also made aware that the female had been curled up on the passenger side seat with her hands protecting her face when the gunshot happened.

She stated she did not see the firearm during the argument and only heard the gunshot and that after the gunshot, she got out of the vehicle and moved to the driver's seat while Angelo crawled over to the passenger seat. The female then drove to the hospital.

The female told officers she didn’t know where Angelo discarded the firearm and couldn’t recall the exact route they took to get to the hospital.

She refused to speak further about Angelo hitting her or what they had been fighting about and then declined to continue speaking with investigators.

Surveillance footage showed the vehicle speeding on Highway 40 in Naples towards Vernal just minutes before arriving at the hospital.

A records check also revealed Angelo is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.

A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, and ammunition was located inside a sling-style bag large enough to hold a firearm, but no firearm was found. A small caliber bullet consistent with a .22 caliber was located embedded in the lower portion of the passenger side door, and what appeared to be another small caliber bullet hole on the ceiling closer to the front passenger side. Two spent .22 caliber shell casings were also located inside the vehicle that matched the unused ammunition located in the bag.

Based on the affirmation of the arresting officer, the undersigned magistrate finds that probable cause existed for the arrest without a warrant of Angelo Jefferson Gonzalez.

The current offense is a Domestic Violence offense. The court finds substantial evidence to support the charge and finds clear and convincing evidence that Angelo Jefferson Gonzalez would constitute a substantial danger to an alleged victim of domestic violence if released on bail.

Therefore, the court ordered Angelo Jefferson Gonzalez to be held without bail.
