Man Attacks Sleeping Brother in His Home

Vernal, Utah (6/26/26)—Authorities responded to a domestic disturbance at a local residence. The victim, 54-year-old John Robert Renwick, had forcibly entered his brother's home and began hitting him.
The victim suffered a cut above his left eye, which was swollen, along with a deep scratch on his back that exposed his muscle. He informed Officer Maughan that he was asleep when he was awakened by John breaking down the door, followed by being attacked.
John managed to flee the scene before law enforcement arrived, but officers quickly found him down the street attempting to hide behind a trailer, with blood visible on his face, although he had no apparent injuries.
As officers sought to search him, John continued to resist. He then turned and spat at one of the assisting officers. Throughout this encounter, the smell of alcohol was noticeable on John's breath. He even attempted to lie down to hinder the arrest.

John was transported to Uintah County Jail, where he was charged with propelling a substance at a peace officer, assault with substantial injury (DV), interfering with an arresting officer, and intoxication.
