At around 10:30 pm, Deputy Woodhouse responded to the report of a child abuse incident West of Roosevelt.
As the deputy was receiving the report, it was difficult to understand what had occurred because the mother and the victim were frantic and had been crying.
Deputy Woodhouse found that the victim was at her grandparent's house when, by accident, the child had tossed a rubber spatula back to her grandfather, 59-year-old Russell Dennis Long, as she was leaving to get into her mother's truck.
The Spatula hit Russell in the face, angering him. Seeing the anger on Russell's face as he came off the porch toward the victim, she ran around her mother’s truck, with Russell chasing behind her. This led to the house and into the laundry room. The victim was hiding behind her grandmother when Russell cornered her in the room, shutting the door.
It was reported that Russell forcefully grabbed the child to cause an abrasion on the left side of her neck. Russell proceeded to smack her on the left side of her face, and then, with a closed fist, hit her on the right side of her face. Russell then grabbed the victim by her hair and dragged her out of the door, tossing her out of the residence. The victim and her mother then left the home and reported the incident.
The mother stated she had witnessed Russell dragging her daughter out of the house by her hair. She said that she couldn’t see the entire incident in the laundry room but saw her daughter hiding behind her grandmother, then pinned against the window.
When Deputy Woodhouse looked at the victim, he found that both sides of her face were red from crying. However, it did appear to have swelling and irritation, which is consistent with the report. The left side of her neck indicated a recent abrasion.
Upon follow-up on June 11th, 2024, the child showed multiple abrasions, including One to her neck, one by her ear, and one to her forehead. She also had a black eye, where she had indicated she had been struck with a closed fist.
Russel Long was later released from the Duchesne County Jail.
