On 12/13/24, a female walked into the VPD and reported that she had been physically abused by her boyfriend the night before.

The victim stated on 12/12/24, she and 47-year-old Daniel Phillip Norton were in their bedroom when he got upset and began accusing her of cheating. The victim was lying on the bed when Daniel put all of his weight on her and placed a pillow on the side of her head, but she was still able to breathe.

She stated it felt as though she couldn't move, so she started swinging her hands toward Daniel and hitting him a few times. The victim said Daniel subsequently began hitting her with a closed fist on the left side of her face and body.

Sgt. Cannon observed the victim had a swollen bloody lip on the inside and outside. She had red markings and bruising on her face and chest. The victim also had puncture wounds and blood behind her left ear where her earring had been pushed into her skin. There were red markings and a light bruise on the victim's arm, likely from Daniel's thumb from when he grabbed her by the arm.

The victim stated that Daniel eventually left the residence and hadn’t returned since the incident.

Sgt. Cannon later met with Daniel and saw he had several fresh superficial abrasions on his face and neck. Daniel stated the wounds were self-inflicted because of what he did to his girlfriend.

Daniel admitted to hitting the victim but did it because she hit him first. The officer asked Daniel to provide more detail, but he decided not to because he wasn't a "rat."

Daniel was placed under arrest and transported to the Uintah County Jail.

When they arrived at the jail, the officer advised Daniel of his rights per Miranda and asked him if he wanted to talk about the incident. He stated he was upset about a male being at his residence with the victim, confronted her about it, and was standing over her yelling.

Daniel said the victim started swinging, so he started swinging, and he believed he punched her in the face twice, but he wasn't positive. He stated that after that, he left the residence.
