Two men were arrested after throwing a gun out of the car window during a police chase

On 2/14/26, at around 3:30 in the afternoon, Officer Adams with the Roosevelt Police Department was patrolling in the area 800 S 300 E in Roosevelt, Utah.

A black Audi approached the officer, going 49 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer turned around and attempted to make a traffic stop on the Audi. The vehicle then turned north on 500 East, continuing to 600 S, where they turned East.

While turning East, a handgun was thrown out of the passenger side window, and continued on 600 S, increasing their speed, trying to lose the officer.

The vehicle then turned southbound on 200 East, then Eastbound on 800 S. At approximately 4000 S 5500 E, the vehicle crashed through a fence and went into a field.

When Officer Adams arrived at the scene, a larger male, later identified as 34-year-old Damon Jesse Garfield, was standing by the driver's side door of the Audi. He also saw another male in a white shirt fleeing from the scene. Sgt. Bird chased the fleeing suspect and caught him. He was identified as 44-year-old Emery Madman.

Damon was placed in handcuffs and searched, and a handgun magazine was found in his jacket pocket. While Damon was taken to the patrol vehicle, the officer could smell the odor of alcohol coming from his breath.

Multiple unopened bottles of Hennessy were found on the ground next to the vehicle and in the back seat.

Damon stated that Emery had thrown the gun out the window. Emery also admitted to throwing the gun out of the window. The vehicle was searched, and a box of 9mm bullets was found on the driver's side of the vehicle by Sgt. Bird.

Damon was arrested and charged with Evading, Reckless driving, driving under the influence, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.

While Sgt. Bird was with Emery, dispatch confirmed that he had a no-bail warrant from the board of pardons. Emery told Sgt. Watkins with the UCSO that he would take him to the area where he threw the gun out of the window.

Emery took Sgt. Watkins to the area where the gun was thrown, and it was found at 600 S 500 E in Roosevelt. Emery was arrested on the Warrant and for being a restricted person with a dangerous weapon.
