Fleeing Suspect Chooses a Rusty Pile of Metal as Hiding Place From Police in Gusher

Gusher, Utah (6/16/26)—Deputy Lyman with the UCSO, along with BIA, was sent to the area near 9500 East and US-40 following reports of a man under the influence.
BIA had been in contact with the homeowner, who expressed that she wanted her son to leave the property. While checking the area, officers heard a noise coming from the backyard and went to investigate.
In the yard, they discovered 51-year-old Curtis Jason Tyler, who had crawled through debris and concealed himself beneath a pile of rusty metal.
Deputy Lyman called out to Curtis, instructing him to come out. Curtis managed to wiggle his way out backward from the mess. Once free, he was asked about his actions. Curtis explained that he was aware police were on their way and was trying to stay out of sight.
Curtis claimed he had arranged for a ride and was waiting for it. The deputy attempted to reach out to this ride but was unsuccessful.
BIA, having received the initial report, determined the situation was outside their jurisdiction and left the scene.
The deputy spoke with the homeowner, who mentioned that Curtis had called for a ride the day before, but it never arrived.
During their conversation, Curtis admitted to starting his drinking at 7 AM and continuing until shortly before the police interaction.
Given Curtis's situation of hiding among sharp metal while intoxicated, Deputy Lyman assessed that he posed a risk to himself. As a result, he was taken into custody and transported to Uintah County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of public intoxication, classified as a Class C misdemeanor.
