Sgt. Johnstun was parked near 280 West Main Street in Vernal when a silver Volkswagen passenger car traveling westbound at approximately 80 mph passed by. The officer immediately turned, got behind the vehicle, and activated his emergency lights and siren.
The speeding vehicle ran through a solid red light at 500 West Main Street, continuing westbound, running the stop signs at 800 West, 1000 West, and 1500 West without slowing down.
The Volkswagen rounded a curve at the roundabout at 1600 West Main Street, and the officer lost sight of it. Sgt. Johnstun continued westbound and last saw the vehicle at the roundabout at Main Street and Aggie Blvd, still traveling westbound.
Sgt. Johnstun radioed the other officers about the vehicle's description, the direction of travel, and the last known location. He then deactivated his emergency equipment and began driving around the area, looking for the vehicle.
Dispatch advised Sgt. Johnstun they had been contacted by a female. The officer was told that the female stated her daughter had messaged her and said she was in a vehicle with a man who was driving over 100 mph and running from the police.
The woman was able to see her daughter's location using an app, which indicated that the vehicle was now traveling North on Deep Creek Road, taking the back way into Vernal.
The mother updated the police on her daughter's location as the vehicle approached Vernal.
With the assistance of other Officers, Sgt. Johnstun stopped the vehicle near 2000 North 3500 West. The driver was identified as 18-year-old Jason Marvin McKee.
Jason then confessed to being the driver and fleeing when the officer attempted to stop him. It was determined there was probable cause Jason had operated a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property by committing three or more traffic violations and knowingly or intentionally attempting to flee or elude a law enforcement officer.
Jason was placed under arrest for failure to respond to the officer's signal to stop and reckless driving. Jason was transported to the Uintah County Jail and booked in on the offenses.
Jason Marvin Mckee may post bail in the amount of $2,500.00.
