| Roosevelt, Ut. | October 26th, 2024 |

A Roosevelt City Police Officer was patrolling North on 500 East when a small silver car traveling toward the officer at 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer initiated a stop on the vehicle at 500 East 1700 South.

Officer Bellon approached the passenger side of the car and saw that it was 31-year-old Dakota Michael Melton, with his hands on his lap, shaking. The officer went around to the driver's side window, and Dakota told him that he had just stolen the vehicle.

Dakota was asked to get out of the car. As he stepped out, he stated that he had been drinking and had stolen several other vehicles in the past. At this point, Officer Bellon detained Dakota.

Officer Bellon ran the vehicle through dispatch, who informed him they just received a call from Vernal about a stolen vehicle that matched the description of the one Dakota was driving.

Dakota told the officer that he had stolen the car in Vernal, which had the keys in it and was unlocked.

When asked how much he had to drink, he stated he had a couple of shots of whiskey.

Based on the results of the field sobriety tests, Dakota was placed under arrest for DUI. While running Dakota's information, it was discovered he did not have a valid driver's license.

Dakota was transported to the hospital and asked if he would be willing to submit to chemical tests; he said that he would not do the blood draw. A warrant was written up and was served for the blood draw.

Dakota was transported to the Duchesne County Jail and was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, a Felony 2 charge; driving under the influence, a 1st charge in 10 years, a class B misdemeanor; driving on a denied license, a class C misdemeanor, and speeding an infraction.
