Vernal, UT (4/16/26)—Vernal City Police were dispatched to the Quality Inn for a disorderly detail. Dispatch advised a Native American male who was possibly intoxicated had taken a phone and a jacket from the hotel.

In the dispatch call notes, the male was acting aggressively, assaulted the complainant, and had fled the scene on foot.

Shortly after officers arrived, one of them heard a male yelling from a vacant field across the street from the hotel. The Officer obtained a visual description of the male, which matched the suspect at the Quality Inn.

The Officer called out to the suspect, "Police, stop!" as the subject approached a fence to cross it. The suspect ignored the command to stop and crossed over the fence.

Other officers arrived on scene and made contact with the suspect, who was making aggressive hand movements towards the officers. Police attempted to gain control of his hands, which he resisted, and the officers escorted him to the ground to attempt to take him into custody. The suspect continued to resist officers by pulling away and not complying with their commands to not resist.

48-year-old Alonzo Jim was taken into custody. Alonzo had a backpack with several items. In those items were black and clear plastic baggies that contained marijuana labeled Hybrid Newe Premium Cannabis. The label also showed it was from Elko, Nevada.

It was confirmed that Alonzo does have a valid Utah Medical Marijuana card; this substance is out of the state and not packaged properly under Utah law. Also found was a blue-colored iPhone.

Officer Samuels went to the hotel to speak with the complainant, who worked at the hotel and was a witness to the incident.

The female witness stated that she had met Jim earlier this evening in the hotel hallway, and the two decided to get some beer and return to the hotel to play dice. The witness advised that they both consumed around 6 beers each, and she decided she no longer wanted Jim in her room and asked him to leave, which he refused to do.

The female said she contacted the front desk and requested assistance in getting the male to leave. She then stated that she had contacted Jim and told him he needed to leave. She advised that Jim was argumentative and then started grabbing items off the bed. One of the items taken from the bed was the other witness's cell phone and coat, and then Jim left the room.

The complainant advised that she was trying to get Jim to leave the hotel. She further advised that he threw an open beer at her and also hit her in the chest area.

She then showed Officer Samuels the area where she was hit, and the Officer saw that she had slightly red marks near her collarbone area.

Officer Samuels spoke with the other witness to this incident and asked her to identify her phone. She then gave a close description of the Cell phone Jim had in his possession, and showed the Officer a picture of herself in the photo gallery. The phone was then released back to the victim.

The hotel’s security cameras caught the assault, and it can be clearly seen Jim hitting the hotel manager with his elbow and hand in the upper chest near the collar bone.
