A Naples City Officer was dispatched to 1967 South 1500 East to the SureStay Hotel, where the complainant stated that he had a room reserved. When he arrived and walked into the room, he found it trashed.
The reporting party stated he began to notice items that he believed were consistent with drugs. The man said he had previously been in law enforcement and found a baggie with a white crystal substance inside the room consistent with methamphetamine.
The complainant left the room and spoke with the clerk about the issue. It was found that the clerk accidentally issued the room that a maintenance worker was currently using.
The clerk believed he was currently working on the third floor, and Officer Cox and the clerk went to the third floor to speak with him.
They met with an older gentleman who was also a worker there. The employee told him they were looking for the other worker, who was found to be this man's son, who the clerk identified as 61-year-old Kenneth William Dunigan.
While speaking with Kenneth, he showed behaviors consistent with meth use, such as quick and slurred speech. He also appeared to become very nervous when Officer Cox told him about the drugs that were located.
Kenneth told them that he stays in one room, and his son lives in another, but he showers in a different room. Officer Cox and the clerk then spoke with the son, who said he uses room 232 to shower. The clerk took them to the room. The clerk opened room 232, which was empty.
Officer Cox then went to relocate Kenneth to talk with and gain permission to search his room. It was learned that Kenneth had fled the hotel. The officer had the clerk open the door to his room so he could clear the room to ensure no one was destroying evidence.
A search warrant was submitted for Kenneth's room and approved.
During the search, assisting officers located a clear baggie sitting in plain view on the nightstand with a white crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine. Also located a prescription bottle on the nightstand was meth. The officers located multiple torch lighters commonly used for drugs. While searching, a backpack with prescriptions in Kenneth's name was lying on the floor, and a notebook was located with Kenneth's mail and other information.
After the search was completed, officers began to search for Kenneth. The mail located in the room had a Vernal address.
Uintah County Sheriff's deputies located Kenneth on the home's porch, was taken into custody, and was transported to the Uintah County Jail.
