A Duchesne man was arrested for putting a jacket over an infant's face to make the baby stop crying.

Duchesne, Utah (5/2/2026)—During the late evening hours, it was reported to dispatch that 30-year-old James Rodney Taylor Prows was seen using a jacket to cover the face of his 8-month-old infant child.
Deputy Clyde arrived at the residence and spoke with Rodney's girlfriend, and she explained that James was lying on the couch with their infant, who was crying. She entered the room and saw Rodney using a jacket to cover the baby's face.
She described that she could hear the infant's cries were muffled as Rodney was covering its face. She stated that she then took the baby away from Rodney.
While the deputy was speaking with James about the incident, James admitted to covering the infant's face to get the baby to stop crying. He also told the deputy that he knew he should not have done this and explained that he had only used his hand to cover the infant's face.
Rodney was placed under arrest for aggravated child abuse, as his actions likely caused an impediment to the infant's breathing, as well as obstructing the nose or mouth, which could result in the loss of consciousness.
Rodney was booked into the Duchesne County Jail.
